As a child of the 80s the likes of Connors, McEnroe, Evert, Navratilova and countless others on TV were a fixture in my household. I was captivated and inspired that I’d grab my Prince Jr Aluminum racquet and hit tennis balls against the side of our house trying to emulate their perfect forehands, backhands and volleys. It wasn’t until a few years later when I was 10 years old that I would have the opportunity to actually take my first proper tennis lesson. They say you never forget your first time and I can still clearly remember the exhilaration of being on a full size court learning the strokes, the footwork and terminology like no man’s land, continental grip, and carioca step. I didn’t have a good racquet for the lesson so they lent me a Wilson Profile – it was bliss!
